Hive Inspection Schedule in Marin County

Timeline will vary by microclimate and annual weather patterns, but in general:

March – July:    Check hive every 2 to 3 weeks (timing depends on weather and available forage. Check more frequently if weather and forage are creating fast build up) and add space as needed.
August – October: Check colony every 3-4 weeks to monitor general health, food stores, and varroa mite levels.
November – February: Visual inspections. Leave colony alone unless concerns over food stores or other problems are enough to warrant opening the colony, preferably on a dry day with temperature above 60 degrees F.
