{"id":1879,"date":"2013-09-09T21:07:11","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T21:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bonniebeecompany.com\/wp\/?p=1879"},"modified":"2013-09-16T05:28:56","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T05:28:56","slug":"10-for-new-beekeepers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bonniebeecompany.com\/wp\/10-for-new-beekeepers\/","title":{"rendered":"10 tips for new beekeepers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Work slowly!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep good records<\/strong>\u00a0of your hive inspections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check hive<\/strong>s every 2-3 weeks from early spring (exact timing depends on weather) and monthly from August \u2013 October.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be conscious<\/strong>\u00a0of being fire safe with your smoker.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep frames squeezed together as you work<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check for adequate brood space<\/strong>\u00a0and whether brood area is honey bound.\u00a0 Need more space?\u00a0 Pull a built out frame up into the center of the new hive body you are adding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know thy bees enemies<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are lots out there\u2026start by focusing on these two:\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Determining levels of varroa mite infestations (especially in late summer &amp; fall), and<\/li>\n<li>Identifying American Foulbrood (you\u2019re not likely to see but because of its\u2019 highly contagious nature it is imperative you familiarize yourself with it).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevent starvation<\/strong>\u00a0(by feeding if\/when necessary) and prevent yellow jacket robbing (by reducing entrance if necessary).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bigger is not always better<\/strong>.\u00a0 As winter approaches, don\u2019t leave too much honey on the colony making it harder for the bees to keep the cluster warm.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Work slowly!\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0(Worth mentioning again.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Work slowly!
